About Us

ModernMath is a system of support for college math faculty. With instructional and assessment resources, live training events, and opportunities to connect with like-minded colleagues, we strive to provide the aid needed to modernize college math programs and courses.

ModernMath was previously yourSTEM. The change reflects our focus on mathematics and on using modern approaches to teaching and learning in the math classroom. As you explore the materials found in ModernMath, you may see references to yourSTEM. They are one and the same. yourSTEM materials were created before the transition to ModernMath but are still the high-quality product you have come to expect from Almy Education.

Community Support

Connect in real time with like-minded colleagues through informal ‘best practices’ discussions. Scheduled throughout the academic year, you are encouraged to bring your own beverage, relax, share, and brainstorm solutions to challenging topics like cheating and student absences during these online, not recorded, BYOB&BP events. Use the asynchronous written discussion boards to introduce yourself and get your questions answered. And, of course, connect with consultants from Almy Education.

Ready-made Activities

Sometimes you need a relevant activity you can quickly pull out and implement in your courses. Modern Math has ready-made activities, both online and on paper that cover a variety of math topics and can be used for multiple purposes. Desmos activities, Kahoot quizzes, beginning algebra activities based on non-Googleable problems, and Graphs in the World are available on paper or as links. Found under “Resources” these ready-made activities are organized by type, course, and topic.

Courses and Training

Learn from the experts and get your questions answered with live online training sessions. Can’t make the training time? Training videos are recorded for later viewing and include learning guides and links to relevant resources. Individual content-focused trainings and multi-session courses are designed to support your planning, instructional, and assessment needs. Available courses include “Corequisite Solutions,” “Teaching Data Analysis,” “Secret Technology Club,” “Become a Desmos Master,” “Assessment for Math,” and more.

Assessments

Active teaching requires active assessment. From problem sets to a full course on Assessment for Math Learning, ModernMath has resources for robust assessment of student learning. View trainings on how to conduct oral exams, write a Desmos activity that can assess students’ learning, and utilize questioning strategies to probe students’ thinking. Use non-Googleable problem sets to assess students or to engage them in active learning. Integrating assessment into your instruction is possible with ModernMath.

Curriculum

Dr. Maria Andersen has her entire Contemporary Algebra Collection (CAC) on ModernMath. With this revolutionary curriculum, you can guide learning while students assess themselves on objectives. Guided notes, videos, powerpoint slides, and problem sets are available for 20 algebra topics. As a bonus, view videos of Maria teaching her own online algebra class. Are you using the text “Math Lit” from Kathleen Almy and Heather Foes? Training and support for navigating all of the features are found as a training course on ModernMath.
